With autumn just a few weeks away, now is the time to plan an end-of-summer vacation. Whether you’re looking to escape the Texas summer heat or just can’t get enough of the hot summer days and nights, there are plenty of destinations to choose from right here in the United States.
Here’s a list of some of the most popular August vacation spots courtesy of homeaway.com:
- Chicago, Ill. – Winters are brutally cold in Chicago, but their summers are very mild. In fact, most Chicagoans don’t even own air conditioners. The mild weather – and low humidity – make Chicago an ideal destination for folks who want to escape the muggy heat of Texas. From towering skyscrapers overlooking the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan to sun-filled baseball games at Wrigley Field, twilight concerts in Millennium Park and free fireworks at Navy Pier, there’s plenty to see and do in Chicago in the summertime.
- Anchorage, Alaska – For travelers looking for guaranteed cool weather and an abundance of wildlife and scenery, Anchorage is the ideal destination. The city boasts huge mountains, a half-million acre state park, 300 miles of hiking and biking trails and world-class sport fishing for king salmon – and of course, plenty of time to do it all thanks to the midnight sun!
- Tucson and Flagstaff, Arizona – If you love a mix of cool and hot temperatures in the summer, Arizona may be the perfect vacation destination for you. Tucson and Flagstaff, where thriving communities of artists and musicians make their homes, are charming cities that combine small-town charm with big-city sophistication. Flagstaff, located in the northern part of the state, sees cooler summer weather than other areas of Arizona and is close to the picturesque and popular town of Sedona. Tucson, located near the Arizona-Mexico border and just an hour’s drive from the international city of Nogales, experiences much hotter temperatures.
- Miami, Florida – If Arizona is not hot enough for you, head down to Miami for some fun in the sun. Swim in the beautiful blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, sun yourself on the white sandy beaches, and then go out at night and soak up the Cuban and Caribbean culture that permeates this South Florida city.
